Back Pain? Here’s How to Cope

Posted on 8th February 2024

Aches and pains can plague us at any point in our lives. However, as we get older these can become more persistent and intense.

Back pain is a frequent offender and can be the most immobilizing. For this reason, we have compiled a list of the best ways to combat back pain. Whether it’s preventative or corrective care, we’ve got some suggestions.

Types of Back Pain

Acute Back Pain

Acute back pain, sometimes called lumbago, is common and normally lasts around 3 weeks. It is usually caused by a strain or injury and is nothing serious. All the remedies below could help this pain.

Chronic Back Pain

Chronic back pain is pain that lasts a longer period of time, doesn’t get better, and may even get worse. This back pain needs to be treated by a physician as it could be due to an underlying health condition. You should always consult your doctor before partaking in home remedies for back pain.

Prevention

Yoga

Yoga is an extremely good activity for the back. It builds core strength by stretching and strengthening back muscles. Yoga is an excellent way to prevent back pain from ever affecting your life. However, it is never too late to start and even if you are already experiencing some pain in your back, yoga should help! Be sure to start softly and build your way up to some harder poses.

Avoid Heavy Lifting

Of course, this might be difficult for those of us in certain professions, but if you can help it, avoid heavy lifting. Carrying shopping from the car? Make two trips. Doing a bit of DIY? Don’t overload yourself and take it slow. Lifting with your knees and not your back can help, but it is better to avoid straining yourself altogether.

Maintain Proper Posture

This is an easy one, but one a lot of us forget about. Anytime you feel your shoulders slumping, pull them back. If you sit at a desk all day, see what resources are available to help your posture. You could raise your desk so you don’t hunch over. Alternatively, use a chair support.

Remedies

Heat

The oldest yet best cure for most pain is heat. While at home place a hot water bottle behind you on the sofa (while keeping perfect posture of course). Invest in a pack of heat pads and wear these when you’re out and about. A hot bath can also work wonders!

Medicated Creams

Creams, oils, and salves can all be rubbed into the skin on your back and help depending on whether you need them to heat, cool, or soothe. The best creams contain menthol, camphor, or lidocaine.

Mobility Issues?

If you experience mobility issues, one of our personal alarms could help. Never worry about falling over or being unwell without assistance again. Simply press your alarm and our emergency response team will get you the help you need immediately.

The fall alarm sensors and detectors on all devices use an algorithm to recognise the difference between ‘hard’ falls and other movements. They cannot guarantee to detect all falls because it is dependent on where and how it is worn and if it can detect the fall. For this reason if you have had a fall or need assistance you should press your emergency pendant or alarm box if you are able.
